The Rottweiler's Temperament Can Be Linked To The Temperament Of The Owner

So you are wondering which type of dog to get, but you are worried about their temperament, as you may have children around the house. Or you maybe wondering if you will be able to cope with a dog that has the temperament of a Rottweiler that you cannot handle.

This article is a good starting point for you to make a decision on which dog to get, as I will provide a brief overview of the temperament of a Rottweiler, why the Rottweiler you maybe asking?

Well simply because for one thing I love Rottweilers and for the another, people tend to shy away from Rottweilers because of the negative image of the Rottweiler and tend to over look one of the main benefits of having a Rottweiler instead of a poodle for example.

First lets start with what the American Kennel Club has to say about the Rottweiler temperament, according to them the Rottweiler is a very intelligent dog, it is a dog full of self-confidence, it is self assure, courageous and a dog that is calm and quietly responds situations that would arrive in its environment.

It is not quick to make friends with stranger, which makes it because of it inherent nature an excellent choice for a guardian and companion who has only one desire in mind, which is to please its owner and protect its home and family. This trait make it a very adaptability and keen to work hard for its owner.

To support these facts is the description of the Rottweiler from the FCI Standard, which states that the Rottweiler is self assure, good nature and a very placid dog. It also states that it is a devoted friend obedient and extremely loyal, very eager to perform for the masters.

Furthermore they state that it is extremely fearless and always alert to the goings on in their surroundings and that their basic disposition is that they are very self assure and steady on their feet.

Furthermore AKC says that Rottweilers love their owners so much that they can sometimes perform childish behaviour around them, but when it comes to strangers it is a different matter, which is why they suggest that you should socialize and give them obedience training from an early age.

My own observations tell me that they are an extremely powerful dog, which has developed over time the genetic for guarding, a spill over from when they use to protect the herds, as they were herding dogs originally.

I also believe that any negative press related to these can be traced back to the owner in terms of the dog being neglected, abused, not trained properly or not socialized properly. Not that the owner is a bad person, but they might for example got a puppy for Christmas, but don't have the time or the know how to raise a dog especially with the temperament of a Rottweiler.

This exactly why experts recommend that proper training and socialization are paramount for Rottweilers. People should be aware that this aggressive nature is unrelated to the dog, but is more related to the guard dog and territorial instincts of the dog. Read The Pack Mentality In Dogs to understand more of this correlation.

My final word on the temperament of a Rottweiler has to be one of the most touching stories for the ownership of a Rottweiler over any other dog, which is the story of Jake, and should be the ultimate aim of any dog owner/trainer, to produce the ultimate soldier.

If you are thinking of getting a Rottweiler puppy or you recently got one, then you need to start its training ASAP.
